Strength for Today
Week Two: When God Seems Silent
I think one of the hardest places to live is the space between praying and seeing. Between asking and receiving. Between believing God has spoken and watching for Him to move.
If I'm honest, I don't think the waiting itself is always the most difficult part. It's the silence.
We pray.
We ask.
We trust.
Nothing seems to happen...
The door doesn't open.
The answer doesn't come.
The situation doesn't change.
The healing doesn't arrive as quickly as we hoped.
The relationship is still broken. The grief still hurts.
The future still feels uncertain.
If you've ever been there, you know how quickly the questions begin.
"Lord, are You listening?"
"Did I hear You wrong?"
"Have You forgotten me?"
"Are You still working?"
Those questions don't make you a weak Christian. They make you human. I've learned that sometimes God's silence feels louder than the storm itself. But something beautiful has been changing my perspective.
Silence does not mean absence.
Just because God seems quiet doesn't mean He has stopped working. Think about a seed. The day it's planted, nothing appears to happen. The next day, still nothing. The week after, nothing visible. Yet beneath the surface, something extraordinary is taking place. Roots are growing long before leaves appear. The deepest work happens where no one can see it.
I wonder how often God works that way in us. Perhaps the season that feels like nothing is happening is actually the season where everything is being prepared.
Psalm 46 wasn't written in peaceful circumstances. It was written in the middle of turmoil. Yet right there, in the midst of chaos, God says, "Be still, and know that I am God." Notice what He doesn't say:
He doesn't say, "Figure everything out."
He doesn't say, "Stop feeling overwhelmed."
He doesn't say, "You'll understand this tomorrow."
He simply says, "Know Me."
Sometimes the greatest miracle isn't that our circumstances change. Sometimes the miracle is that while everything around us feels uncertain, our hearts become steady because we've learned to trust the One who never changes.
Looking back over my own life, I can see seasons I once called delays that God was actually using as preparation. Doors that didn't open protected me from walking through the wrong ones. Prayers that seemed unanswered were often answered differently than I expected. Waiting became the classroom where trust was quietly growing.
Maybe that's where you are today.
Maybe you're waiting for healing.
Waiting for direction.
Waiting for reconciliation.
Waiting for God to move.
Friend...
Don't mistake the silence for God's absence. The God who formed galaxies without hurry is not rushing your story either.
He is never late.
He is never distracted.
He is never unsure of what comes next.
Even when you cannot see His hand, you can trust His heart; because the God who is working beneath the surface is often doing the kind of work that can only be seen in hindsight.
One day you'll look back and realize that He was there all along. Not because every prayer was answered the way you wanted, but because He never stopped holding you.
This Week's Reflection
Where in your life have you mistaken God's silence for His absence?
Take a few quiet moments today and simply sit with Him. Not to ask for another answer, but to remember His character. Sometimes peace comes not from knowing what God is doing, but from remembering Who God is.
A Prayer
Father,
Waiting is hard. Silence is hard. Not knowing what comes next is hard. Yet even here, remind us that Your silence never means You have abandoned us.
Help us to trust You when we cannot trace Your hand. Give us patience while You prepare what we cannot yet see. Strengthen our faith in the hidden seasons. Teach us to rest in Your presence instead of demanding immediate answers.
Thank You that even when nothing appears to be changing around us, You are faithfully working within us.
May we leave this place with quieter hearts, steadier faith, and deeper confidence that You are writing a story more beautiful than we can yet imagine.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
A Blessing for Your Week
May you find peace in the waiting,
Hope in the silence,
Courage for the next step,
And confidence that the God who began a good work in you will be faithful to complete it.
Until next Tuesday,
With grace, coffee & leggings,
