When summer rolls around, the routines shift. The pace slows (at least a little), the days stretch long, and the pressure to keep up with traditional school rhythms begins to fade. But if you’re anything like me, a homeschooling, work-from-home mom juggling all the hats, you might still hear that little voice whispering:
“Are we doing enough?”
“Shouldn’t we be finishing that book?”
“Will we fall behind?”
Let me gently remind us both:
Summer is still school - it just looks a little different. The learning that happens now might be the most lasting of all.
In our family, we’ve taken some much-needed time off this summer. In June, we visited family in Florida, celebrating birthdays and Father’s Day with the people we love. In July, we’re doing it again to honor our nephew’s 13th birthday.
These trips aren’t interruptions to our homeschool schedule, they are part of it. Why? Because our kids are learning what it means to value family, to show up for others, to celebrate life’s milestones with joy and intentionality.
That kind of learning can’t be found in a workbook.
While many families have “closed the books” for the year, we’re still finishing up our 2025 school term at our own pace, in a way that works for our rhythm. It’s not late. It’s not off-track. It’s just us doing what’s right for our home and our children.
Real-Life Lessons Happen Daily
There are no formal lesson plans taped to our fridge this month. But learning? It’s everywhere, and it’s constant.
My 13-year-old has been loving the kitchen, regularly making breakfast for our family. She’s learning more than just how to crack eggs or flip pancakes - she’s learning about responsibility, timing, patience, generosity, and joy in serving others.
My 17-year-old works two days a week doing landscaping and lawn care. He’s learning how to manage his time, keep commitments, show up with integrity, and value his hard-earned money. These are lessons that will carry him far into adulthood, and no textbook could ever teach them better.
Meanwhile, they’re also helping around the house. Cooking, cleaning, doing laundry, mowing the lawn, and scrubbing dishes. We don’t separate “school” from “life”, because in our home, it’s all part of the same beautiful education.
Around here, we have a little saying:
“We all work together, then we all play together.”
It’s a rhythm that’s helped us anchor our days in purpose, not pressure.
Some days, learning looks like journaling about our garden and spotting God’s hand in nature. Other days, it looks like helping cousins blow out birthday candles, or reading a devotional in the car while waiting for work pickup.
Learning through the little things might not look impressive on paper but it’s deeply formative.
It teaches flexibility. It honors rest. It values connection. It reminds me (over and over again) that education is about shaping hearts and character, not just checking boxes.
You are not behind.
You’re in a season of living, loving, and learning, even if the house is a mess and the lesson plans are still in the folder.
Structure will return. Routines will reset. For now, let yourself soak in the fruit of the slow moments.
If your kids are helping… loving… trying… learning through life, then you’re doing exactly what you were called to do.
Let grace be your guide. Let peace quiet the pressure.
Remember… Summer is still school, just with a little more sunlight, a lot more grace, and a pace that allows everyone to breathe.
With grace, coffee & leggings,
