Summer is here, Queen Bees! While the school year might be winding down, that doesn’t mean the learning has to stop. In fact, summer is the perfect time to encourage joyful reading habits and create sweet memories through books. Whether you're homeschooling year-round or simply trying to keep screen time in check, a solid summer reading rhythm can keep those little minds sharp, curious, and inspired.
Research shows that kids can lose up to two months of learning over the summer if they’re not engaged in educational activities. But don’t worry, it doesn’t have to feel like “school.” Reading opens up new worlds, builds vocabulary, strengthens faith, and teaches empathy in the most magical way.
From backyard adventures to bedtime stories, every book counts! When kids feel ownership over their reading journey, they’re more likely to want to read.
To help you make reading fun (and maybe even your kids' favorite summer activity), I’ve created a FREE Summer Reading Tracker just for you, Queen Bee Moms!
This colorful printable is designed for kids of all ages and works beautifully whether you’re reading together as a family or encouraging older kids to explore stories on their own.
With the tracker, kids can:
Set reading goals that feel exciting and achievable
Record each book's title, author, and rating (perfect for future re-reads or book swaps!)
Color in each book number they complete because who doesn’t love a visual celebration?
Feel proud of every milestone with the option to earn small rewards or plan mini family celebrations
Mom Tip: Create a “Summer Reading Corner” in your home. Add cozy pillows, baskets of books, and maybe even fairy lights. It doesn’t have to be fancy, just inviting!
Want to infuse faith into your reading list? Here are a few favorite Christian children’s titles to get you started:
The Jesus Storybook Bible by Sally Lloyd-Jones
Indescribable: 100 Devotions About God & Science by Louie Giglio
God Gave Us You by Lisa Tawn Bergren
The Chronicles of Narnia series by C.S. Lewis (great for older kids!)
Pairing reading time with simple devotionals or conversations about values and character can make books even more meaningful.
Whether you’re doing weekly library trips, joining a book club, or reading aloud during snack time, you’re planting seeds that will grow for years to come. Reading is a gift we can give our kids that lasts a lifetime.
