A Little Friendly Competition

Our Visit to Valhalla Board Game Café

Every once in a while, we stumble across one of those places that makes me think: How have we not done this before? Saturday was one of those days.

My children and I headed to Valhalla Board Game Café in Pelham, Alabama, and before we'd even made it all the way inside, I knew I was going to want to share this one with you; because this is definitely not your average café.

The entrance alone gives you a pretty good clue about what's waiting inside. Valhalla has fully embraced its Norse-inspired theme, and once you walk through the doors, you'll find shelves and shelves of games, glowing lanterns, shields, axes, murals, cozy seating and tables just waiting for someone to sit down and declare themselves the undisputed family game-night champion.

Which, depending on your family, may or may not end peacefully.

We're a family that enjoys games, so naturally this was right up our alley, but one of the things I liked most about Valhalla is that you don't have to consider yourself a serious "gamer" to enjoy being there.

You can walk in, find something that looks interesting, grab a table and play. Simple as that.

And when I say there are games to choose from... I mean GAMES...

SO, MANY. GAMES!!!

I'm not talking about a little shelf in the corner with Monopoly, Scrabble and a deck of cards. There are entire walls of games.

There were familiar titles I recognized immediately and plenty that made me stop and think, What in the world is THAT? Which, quite frankly, just makes me want to go back and try them.

You'll find everything from quick and familiar games to strategy games, card games, role-playing games and titles you've probably never encountered before; and I think that's part of the fun.

Instead of walking in knowing exactly what you're going to do, you can pick something completely new, sit down together and figure it out.

Will everyone understand the rules? Eventually.
Will somebody confidently explain a rule incorrectly? Probably.
Will someone become far more competitive than the situation warrants? Almost certainly.

That's family game night.

They Really Committed to the Theme

This may have been one of my favorite things about Valhalla. They didn't simply choose a Norse-inspired name, hang a sign on the wall and call it finished. The theme is everywhere.

There are glowing lanterns hanging above the tables, axes and swords on the walls, shields, artwork, rustic wood details and even a cozy fireplace surrounded by games. It feels immersive and fun without feeling like you've walked onto the set of a theme park attraction.

There's always another little detail to notice.

I especially loved the lanterns hanging over the gaming tables. They give the space such a warm, cozy atmosphere and make you want to settle in and stay awhile.

Which is really what Valhalla seems designed for.

Put Down the Phones and Pick Up a Game

This is probably what I appreciated most about our visit. We live in a world where it is incredibly easy for everyone in a family to be together, without actually being together.

One person is scrolling.
Someone else is watching a video.
Someone has headphones on.
Someone else is answering a text.

And before we know it, we've spent an entire afternoon in the same room without really interacting at all.

Places like Valhalla offer something different.

Sit down.
Choose a game.
Talk.
Laugh.
Strategize.
Tease each other.
Argue about whether someone is actually allowed to do what they just did.
Check the rule book.
Discover that they absolutely were allowed to do it.
Refuse to admit defeat.
Demand a rematch.

You know... quality family bonding.

As a mom, I'm always happy to discover another place where my children and I can spend time together and actually have something to do together; and this isn't an outing that only works for little kids. Teenagers, young adults, parents, grandparents, couples and groups of friends can all find something here. That's a pretty big win in my book.

It's a Café Too

Of course, there's another important word in the name: Café. If we're going to settle in for an afternoon of fierce tabletop competition, refreshments are clearly necessary.

Valhalla offers food and drinks, including coffee, along with adult beverage options such as beer, wine and mead. The café setup means you don't have to choose between going somewhere to eat and finding somewhere to hang out. You can settle in at a table, grab something to drink or eat and make an afternoon or evening of it.

More Than a Place to Play Games

Another thing that caught my attention while we were there was Valhalla's event calendar. This isn't simply a place where people wander in, borrow a game and leave. They regularly host gaming nights, meetups and other community events.

When we visited, the calendar was filled with different activities throughout the month, and it was obvious that Valhalla has become a gathering place for Birmingham-area gamers. I love that. Especially because walking into a hobby space when you don't know anyone can sometimes feel intimidating.

Having organized events gives people a way to show up, meet others who enjoy the same things and become part of a community; and if you've been wanting to try something like Dungeons & Dragons or another tabletop game but have absolutely no idea where to begin, a community like this may be exactly what you need.

The Story Behind Valhalla

Something else I learned about Valhalla is that the café didn't begin with this permanent space. Owners Nick Hammett and Adam Valentine began building a tabletop gaming community by hosting board-game events around the Birmingham area before eventually opening the permanent Valhalla Board Game Café in Pelham. I love stories like that!

An idea.
A community that begins growing around it.
And eventually, a physical place where that community can gather.

When you walk through Valhalla now and see people sitting around tables, shelves filled with games and a calendar filled with events, you're seeing more than a business. You're seeing what can happen when someone takes something they're passionate about and creates a place for other people to enjoy it too.

While we were there, I had the opportunity to speak with Hunter, the manager. I told him about ZQueenBee and asked whether he would mind if I took photographs of the café and wrote about our visit. His response? Absolutely.

He told me to tag him when I shared it. So Hunter, if you're reading this... Hi! Thank you for letting this curious blogger wander around your café taking approximately 847 photographs of your walls, games, lanterns and fireplace. Okay. Maybe not 847... but I definitely took enough that choosing which ones to put in this post became a project all by itself.

Is Valhalla Just for Gamers?

No, and I think that's worth emphasizing. You absolutely can be the person who owns dozens of complicated strategy games and knows what every gaming acronym means. You'll probably love it. That said, you can also be the person whose board-game expertise consists primarily of Uno and occasionally yelling, "You owe me rent!" during Monopoly.

Valhalla works because the activity is as simple or as involved as you want it to be.

Bring your family.
Meet some friends.
Plan a date.
Take your teenagers.
Try a new game.
Attend an event.

Or find a cozy corner and spend a few hours doing something that doesn't require staring at your phone.

So... Is Valhalla Buzz Worthy?

You already know my answer. Absolutely.

One of the things I want to do more of here on ZQueenBee is share the places around Birmingham that perhaps don't always appear on the typical "Things to Do" list. The little gems. The places we discover and immediately want to tell someone else about. The places where families can make memories without needing an elaborate itinerary or an entire day's budget. Valhalla fits that beautifully.

Sometimes family time doesn't need to be complicated.
Sometimes all you need is a table.
A game.
Something good to drink.
A couple of hours together.

And perhaps a tiny bit of friendly competition. Okay. Who am I kidding? In our family? A LOT of friendly competition. We'll definitely be back!
